What Are OSHA 1910 Catwalks?

OSHA 1910 catwalks are elevated walkways designed and constructed to meet the safety standards set by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) under its general industry regulations outlined in section 1910 Subpart D. These catwalks provide safe access and egress to elevated equipment and work areas in boiler rooms and industrial facilities where the height exceeds eight feet.

What Are the Benefits of OSHA 1910 Catwalks?

OSHA 1910 Catwalks Installation Process

Trap Energy Solutions designs and erects custom catwalks and walkways around your boiler room equipment, meeting your unique needs for space, layout, height, and other factors. We use top-quality ErectaStep® products and components to ensure your complete satisfaction.

Step one

We begin by visiting your industrial or commercial boiler room facility to look over the layout and discuss your needs. While on-site, we take extensive measurements and photographs to help us design the most efficient system. A catwalk system can include ladders, gates, walkways, work platforms, and other elements.

Step two

After returning to our office, our team creates a detailed diagram of the proposed catwalk system for your boiler room. The diagram contains measurements and specifications demonstrating the system’s compliance with OSHA regulations. We then share this diagram with you and discuss how it best meets your needs and budget.

Step three

After you approve the proposed catwalk system, we obtain the necessary components from approved vendors. Some premade components and modular sections can be used, but we can also create custom pieces to meet any needs. We generally receive all the necessary components within 2-3 days from ordering.

Step four

Our team returns to your site at a preselected time and erects the catwalk system according to our diagram. We also train your team members to use the gates and other elements to ensure safety and compliance. Finally, we present your company with all the necessary documentation concerning OSHA 1910 compliance for future safety audits.

Why OSHA 1910 Catwalks Are Important

OSHA 1910 catwalks are crucial for maintaining safety and compliance in industrial environments, especially around boilers and high-altitude equipment. These structures provide safe, reliable access to elevated areas, allowing workers to perform maintenance and service tasks without the risks associated with unsafe ladders or makeshift platforms. By meeting stringent OSHA specifications for dimensions, load capacity, and fall protection, catwalks ensure that employees can confidently navigate their workspaces.

Examples of Our Work

From boiler-room catwalks to full access platforms.

We design and install OSHA 1910–compliant catwalks, caged ladders, and elevated access platforms — starting at the boiler and extending to overhead process and utility runs throughout your facility.

What are OSHA 1910 catwalks, and why are they important?

OSHA 1910 catwalks are elevated walkways designed to provide safe access to equipment and work areas that exceed eight feet in height. They are crucial for ensuring workers’ safety by adhering to specific OSHA standards regarding dimensions, load capacity, clearance, and fall protection. Using catwalks allows workers to perform maintenance tasks more efficiently while minimizing the risk of falls and accidents.

OSHA 1910 catwalks are required to meet several specifications, including proper dimensions (width and height), load capacity (to support personnel and equipment), and safety features such as fall protection systems (e.g., guardrails). These standards ensure that catwalks provide a secure and reliable means of access to elevated areas around boilers and equipment.

Yes, Trap Energy Solutions specializes in designing and erecting custom OSHA 1910-compliant catwalks tailored to the specific needs of your facility. Our team will assess your work environment, discuss your requirements, and create a catwalk solution that meets all safety standards while providing effective access to your equipment.
